Day 1

old Sofia

Departure in front of the Monument of the Soviet Army, located in the Borisova Garden, not far from the Eagles` Bridge. This garden also used to house the monument of Leonid Brezhnev – probably one of the most important figures in the Communist Party of the Soviet Union after Stalin. Today only the base of the monument reminds of its existence. The tour continues with walking around the antique market outside Alexander Nevski Cathedral, with a chance to pick-up old communist relics. Along “Rakovski” Street you will see the building of the former Russian Embassy, nowadays “Home of Moscow” and the Theatre of the Bulgarian Army. The tour continues with the former place of the Georgi Dimitrov Mausoleum. The construction of the Mausoleum began right after the news of Dimitrov’s death. It was built for a record time of 6 days, the time it took for Dimitrov’s body to return to Sofi a from the USSR. The Mausoleum was destroyed in 1999. You will pass by the former headquarters of the Communist Party – the so called “Party House”, the Presidency and the Central Department Store (TSUM) – the shopping center for the communist elite. An emblematic for communist Sofia yellow tram (even nowadays part of the public transportation system in Sofia) will take you along the Vitosha Boulevard and you will reach the National Palace of Culture. That building is probably the largest congress hall on the Balkans, which today still holds the annual congress of the Socialist Party. The vicinity of the National Palace of Culture also keeps a relic from the passed time – a piece of the Berlin Wall, which destruction started only DAY 1 before the radical democratic changes occurred in Bulgaria on 10 November, 1989. The public transportation will take you back to the city center and namely the beginning of Borisova Garden. This is the biggest park area in Sofia, which still keeps a partisan monument called Bratska Mogila (Common Grave). During the communist period the monument with its 41 m. obelisk gave the name of the garden – “Park of Liberty”. The tour ends at the Eagles` Bridge area.
